Schedule: Features

  • X+Y: Med Peds residents on medicine will be on an X+Y schedule of 4+2 weeks starting July 2025. Pediatrics currently has a modified X+Y schedule.
  • Call Schedule: Only 1 rotation (VA ICU) has 24-hour call, which occurs every 7 days only on VA ICU for 1 month as an R2. There are a total of 1-3 24-hour ward cross cover shifts on pediatrics as a PGY3/4. No other 24-hour call. 
  • Shifts: Inpatient wards are staffed with day teams and night teams, with a well-established sign out system
  • Rotation Duration: Thirteen 4-week blocks, sometimes divided into two 2-week blocks
  • Cross-cover Call: Established to cover residents for illness and family emergencies.
  • Length of Intern Year: 12 months
  • Night Float: Provides 5 p.m. – 7 a.m. coverage of ward patients from the day teams to allow night teams to focus on new admissions
  • Vacation: 4 weeks of paid vacation per year, divided into two 2-week blocks

  • 4 weeks Cardiovascular Care rotation
  • 2 weeks outpatient elective

Pediatrics:

  •  4 weeks Newborn
  • 4 weeks academic pediatrics primary care
  • 4 weeks FQHC community pediatrics primary care
  • 6 weeks inpatient wards
  • 2 weeks night admitting
  • 4 weeks Neonatal ICU

PGY-2

Medicine:

  • 2 weeks HIV clinic
  • 2 weeks Musculoskeletal
  • 2 weeks UCSD Emergency Department
  • 4 weeks Inpatient Wards
  • 4 weeks VA Intensive Care Unit
  • 4 weeks Cardiovascular Care rotation
  • 6 weeks Electives

Pediatrics:

  • 4 weeks Developmental/Behavioral Pediatrics
  • 2 weeks Academic Pediatrics Primary Care
  • 2 weeks Community Pediatrics/Advocacy
  • 4 weeks Inpatient Wards
  • 4 weeks Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
  • 4 weeks Pediatrics Emergency Department
